Q: Do you offer free advice over the phone or by email?
A: The first time you contact us, we'll gladly assess your situation at no cost. If we happen to solve your problem in the first five minutes of that first conversation, we won't charge you anything. Please note that this is usually a per-household or per-business offer.
Q: Why is my computer running slow?
A: This could be a combination of things, from insufficient RAM to needing a good tune-up. If you have less than 768 MB of RAM with Windows XP or less than 2 GB (2048 MB) with Windows Vista/7/8/10, consider adding more RAM. We can help you do this easily. Otherwise, we offer a VERY comprehensive tune-up that can speed up your computer by at least 300 percent. Our tune-up process is several times more detailed than tune-ups offered by others.
Q: I think I can speed up my computer by removing photos and documents from my hard drive.
A: This will only help a little. There are key differences between your hard drive and RAM. Your files and programs are stored on your hard drive, and only become active in RAM when you have them open. More likely, you have too many programs that load and run in the background when you turn on your computer. You should, however, only attempt to disable these if you know exactly what you are doing.
Q: I accidentally deleted a file and it isn't in my recycle bin. Can I recover it?
A: If you deleted it in the last 24 hours, stop using the computer and call us. When you delete a file, your computer normally just marks the beginning of that space as free or unused. If another file has not been saved to that area, your deleted file may be recoverable.
Q: My computer won't boot. Did my hard drive crash? Is everything lost?
A: Most likely, no. Computers can stop booting for literally hundreds of reasons. Only a handful of these possibilities include loss of data. Even if we cannot make your computer boot again, we can usually transfer your data to another computer. If your drive did crash, the data may still be recoverable by our "clean-room" experts, but you'll need to decide if the cost justifies the need.
Q: A key popped off my laptop keyboard and I lost it. Can you replace it?
A: Yes! It usually takes about a week to get the replacement keyboard key, after we know the exact laptop model, then it just takes a minute to put it on. If more than three keys are missing, we'll probably suggest just replacing the keyboard, since the cost may be about the same.
Q: I had a problem with my computer, and my husband/brother/friend (fill in the blank) who "knows a lot about computers" made it worse, or told me I need a new computer. Can you help?
A: Absolutely! Sometimes people know enough to get themselves into trouble, and then they think all is lost when they can't fix it. This accounts for a large percentage of our clients.
